Life moves on in Kaikoura

3 months on from Novembers earthquakes and Kaikoura is still here. The surf’s been good, breaks are working still, though most have changed a bit ( surf info ). The water seems cold this year, a good 3/2 wetsuit has been a must, with stats saying that water temps are 2 to 3 deg colder this year across NZ.

The Mountains have gotten bigger, but slips and rock fall are still coming down, so venture at your own risk. I personally would be leaving it till after winter and settles down. The Mt Fyffe trail is still good to the Hut and summit. The Kowhai to Hapuku trail is still a bit unstable. Check Doc site and alerts PAGE

The roads are coming along, we have full access up to Mangamaunu going north. The road to Picton will open sometime this year, at the moment it is closed no matter what google maps tells you. The road south is open during the day but closes in the evening 7pm till 6am, if you get caught out the only other way in or out is the inland road past Mt Lyford.

Town itself is pretty damn good, most businesses are back up and running, I would say at least 80% are good to go. Late night shopping has not really happened this year so, don’t leave eating out or shopping too late.

The diving has been good, but there is a ban in place for all shellfish including Paua. Cray is ok to catch and all wet fish. Normal catch limits and size regs apply.Check MPI PAGE.

Come and say hi if your town, what makes Kaikoura special is still here, the mountains, the surf, the people and wildlife, all the things that I live in Kaikoura for, we just have it to ourselves a bit more.

cheers
